Advantages
This task familiarises students with conducting primary and secondary research (both qualitative and quantitative), the process of gathering and synthesising data, and making predictions about a relevant disciplinary concerns in a target community. With its focus on both qualitative and quantitative research skills , this assessment is well suited to all HASS disciplines, particularly those engaged with scientific methods.
Challenges
Depending on students' diverse learning styles, some may be apprehensive about using statistical data or conducting qualitative fieldwork . Staff should be sure to thoroughly explain underlying methodologies required for the task and encourage students to move beyond their comfort zones when completing the task.
Tips for implementation
Provide students with resources to assist in data collection (especially qualitative fieldwork ). Dedicate workshop time to familiarising students with how to access and analysing statistical census data.
