'Phone a Friend' Task

One of the most common criticisms of law students on clinical placements is that they lack telephone communication skills. Speaking confidently over the telephone is an important part of working with clients, especially in law where advice is often provided over the phone. The 'phone a friend' task meets two aims at once: ensuring students have prepared for class, and encouraging them to develop their oral communication skills when using the telephone.

Clinical Project Using Action Learning

As part of a progressive series of seminars, this assessment item acts as the culminating piece for each seminar. The default submission format is a written piece lodged via Turn-It-In of between 750-1500 words - with greater weight allocated to the assessment items as the seminars progress. Because of the nature of the cohort (practising sport coaches) and the level of the program (post-graduate study), students are offered a degree of choice within each seminar (e.g. topic focus and submission format). Students are supported through this process through the seminar structure of reading week, discussion week, assessment week).

Community Research Group Project

In this semester-long, scaffolded assessment, students collaborate in small groups to complete a community-based research project, drawing on discipline-specific methodologies and conceptual frameworks. The assessment is divided into three tasks focusing on (1) quantitative research skills, (2) qualitative research skills, and (3) presenting key research findings.

Students are required to operate a variety of data curation and analysis software systems to produce a dataset, and then perform both qualitative and quantitative analyses of these datasets.

Digital Curation and Pinterest Presentation

Developed as an assessment for learning (rather than assessment of learning), this scaffolded task prompts students to consider how social theory is brought to bear through personal narratives. Students use digital platforms (e.g. Pinterest) to create a fictional character profile which becomes a point of reference for progressive tutorial activities.

In groups, students deliver a performance piece on a topic arising from the course. Focusing on creative modalities, students develop an imaginative approach to their presentation such as a video submission, theatrical performance, role play, art exhibition, movie pitch etc. This is accompanied by an individual 500 word critical reflection.

Students carry out and analyse four interviews (with individuals selected on the basis of discipline). The assessment consists of four stages: developing a semi-structured interview schedule and locating interviewees; conducting and recording interviews; creating verbatim transcripts; and performing qualitative analysis to produce a 1000 word field report of their findings.

Online Tests to Support Student Learning

Students complete two online tests across the semester as part of their progressive learning and assessment for the course. The tests are delivered through the Blackboard exam tool and are written and maintained by the course coordinator. Test questions are developed within the decision-making framework introduced in the course. Each test opens for several days and students are given two attempts at each test.

This assessment is based on the work that a typical 1st year to 5th year graduate would do as an investment analyst. They are required to work in a team of four and complete extensive research and analysis of a company, it's industry and competitors. Then develop a rigorous financial model to value the company and write an in depth report for an investment committee to recommend buying or selling this investment.
