The ‘Practical Demonstration’ is an authentic, inclusive and secure assessment where students act as business analysts, responding to a workplace-style briefing using a previously unseen dataset. Working under invigilated exam conditions, students apply data analysis, visualisation, predictive modelling, and communication skills to deliver evidence-based insights for decision-making while demonstrating industry-relevant analytical, problem-solving, and professional capabilities.

The Management Consultant Briefing is an authentic Interactive Oral Assessment where students act as tourism consultants, presenting evidence-based recommendations to improve visitor experiences. Engaging in a professional conversation, students apply disciplinary knowledge, justify decisions, and respond to client questions while developing industry-relevant communication, problem-solving, and professional skills.

Underpinned by the principles of authentic assessment, this task gives students an opportunity to develop their skills with research and communicating economic thinking. This experience replicates the type of ‘real world’ work that economists undertake. In ECON2060, students determine their own research question and design practical and feasible methods to answer their question.

I designed this authentic assessment (case studies, team-based assignments, report writing) to 'inoculate' my students with managerial challenges (e.g. conflict management) while connecting theory and practice to resolve these challenges in the real world of work.

The innovation in this task is using GenAI to develop students’ assessment literacy and understanding of the task's requirements.
