Padlet Digital Reflections
Every week of semester students are required to use Padlet to write a reflection using concepts and theories from the week's lecture, readings, and from other resources such as academic and media articles, open blogs, images, video and social media.
Team or Group based
Presentation of Basic Mixed Methods (Quantitative and Qualitative) Research
In this assessment students are asked to collect and analyse some basic qualitative and quantitative data from a site of their choosing, and then present their findings. Students are asked to choose a site to collect their data (examples of sites can be provided but they can also be given freedom to choose one that is not listed in the examples). They are then asked to design a research question, collect some basic quantitative data and qualitative data that relates to the themes of the course, conduct some basic analysis (in the case of quantitative typically just some frequencies), link their findings to existing academic literature, and present their findings in their tutorial.
Assessment method
Media Inspired Essay
In this assessment students choose a piece of contemporary media and discuss the issues it raises using academic literature. Students are given some restrictions on the media they can choose such as what topic the chosen media should discuss, what forms of media they can choose from, or when the media was released. Students select a media item and read it in order to identify an issue, or several related issues, which relate to the themes of the course. Using the issue/s as a foundation they write their own research question and answer it using the academic literature.
Team or Group based
Creative Media Production Exercise
Completed in pairs, this assessment sees students work collaboratively to produce a creative media output and an accompanying rationale detailing and justifying the stylistic choices made (in the case of MSTU1001 students produce a section of film storyboard). Students are marked on their grasp of relevant conventions and theories.
Team or Group based, Peer-assessed
Group Presentation with Creative Peer Feedback
In small groups students prepare an oral presentation in which they draw on key disciplinary outputs to discuss a topic relevant to the course content. Additionally, students must individually provide peer feedback/reflections for two other group presentations, the form of which is to be decided by the student.
Assessment method
Online discussion (Participation on Internet news websites)
Designed to encourage students to participate in discipline specific real-world discussions, this assessment sees students post in the 'comments' section of online news websites, using either the originally posted article or an existing comment as stimuli. Students write a total of three comments, the best two of which are marked.
Assessment method
Formative Writing Tasks and Online Portfolio
Designed with an explicit focus on developing students writing capabilities (especially in relation to professional and/or vocational genres), this assessment sees students produce weekly written pieces of varying genres for which they receive qualitative feedback. Students must then choose 4 of these written pieces for revision and inclusion in a summative online portfolioportfolio.
Assessment method
Creative Genre Writing with Reflection
Designed to develop student's critical awareness of their own writing practice and to learn modes of creative and reflective written genres, this assessment sees student write a short creative genre piece (in the case of WRIT1005 students write a children's short story) and produce an accompanying 500-word critical reflection.
Team or Group based
Participatory Media Production Project
This authentic assessment sees students work collaboratively in groups to engage an external participant group in the production of media output based on topical and generative themes selected by the organisation participant through processes of facilitation and discussion.

External Client Engagement and Report
In small groups (2-4) students liaise with an external client organisation and conduct stakeholder engagement to produce a report or output that aligns with client needs. In the case of COMU7013, students design, conduct, analyse, and report on, a participatory needs and opportunity assessment relating to a simple, real-world issue.
