In this assessment students conduct a small-scale research project, from which they produce two assessable outputs. The first sees students develop and document primary data collection. This task allows students to demonstrate skills in data collection and documentation by having them collate key components of raw fieldwork outputs. For example, students may be required to submit documents such as technical metadata, interview schedules, partial transcriptions, and reflexive field notes, as well as raw data media files. In the case of LING3020 there is an explicit focus on the archival usefulness of these documents, hence students are assessed on the clarity and detail of their documentation. The second part of this assessment sees students conduct an initial analysis of raw data and produce a research report of key findings. Students are marked on how they present and discuss their data in accordance with disciplinary conventions. In LING3020, this assessment is used to introduce students to the process of gathering and analysing linguistic data through direct work with a speaker of an unfamiliar language. Students investigate and report on one particular aspect of the language under investigation, utilising primary data recorded during elicitation sessions which is informed by previous research.
