Argumentative Essay Assignment
In this progressive assessment students write a 1200 word argumentative essay in a supported learning environment. This assessment's innovation lies in its pedagogical underpinnings and the teaching environment in which it is delivered. Students complete weekly activities in argument mapping, effective communication, and critical reasoning as progressive learning tools to construct their essay.

Authentic assessment: An interactive museum exhibit
Concepts and skills are developed over a semester to design an interactive computer program for a hypothetical museum exhibition. By providing structure while leaving some aspects unspecified, students make creative choices and combine skill sets, and demonstrate mastery to meet the objective of inspiring patrons. Clear and relevant communication to the end-user is a top priority.

Creative Production Project and Presentation
As a class students are set a collaborative task to produce a creative item relevant to their discipline (e.g. in MUSC3020, an original Album recorded and produced by students) and attend weekly laboratory sessions focused on relevant skill acquisition. This is scaffolded with written reflections where students outline their contribution.
Assessment method
Creative Genre Writing with Reflection
Designed to develop student's critical awareness of their own writing practice and to learn modes of creative and reflective written genres, this assessment sees student write a short creative genre piece (in the case of WRIT1005 students write a children's short story) and produce an accompanying 500-word critical reflection.

Creative Media Production Exercise
Completed in pairs, this assessment sees students work collaboratively to produce a creative media output and an accompanying rationale detailing and justifying the stylistic choices made (in the case of MSTU1001 students produce a section of film storyboard). Students are marked on their grasp of relevant conventions and theories.

Design Development Supported by a Virtual Environment
Delivered in an active learning environment, this work-integrated learning experience and authentic assessment task requires preparation of a written and diagrammatic report. Students critically analyse a given construction detail in 4-dimensions using an interactive digital learning environment, then apply their learning to a 3-dimensional analysis and resolution of two construction details derived from a team-based schematic design completed in the previous assignment.

Educational Poster Exercise
This assessment has students design a multimodal poster including text, images and visual design elements as an inquiry into a topic of disciplinary relevance. This technique has successfully trialled in the School of Education where it functions to introduce pre-service teaches to inquiry-based pedagogical models, but serves all HaSS disciplines.
Group
Educational Video Project
Students work in pairs to create a short (3 minute) educational video for presentation during a scheduled tutorial time. Students choose for the topic of their video a real-life context that allows them to explore and teach a concept relevant to the course.
Sequence
Essay Preparation Task
This five part assessment task (presented in a Blackboard learning module) is designed to build foundational research skills, provide meaningful engagement with library resources, and prepare students for a major assessment item.

External Client Engagement and Report
In small groups (2-4) students liaise with an external client organisation and conduct stakeholder engagement to produce a report or output that aligns with client needs. In the case of COMU7013, students design, conduct, analyse, and report on, a participatory needs and opportunity assessment relating to a simple, real-world issue.
